Makeovers That Matter offers female veterans everything we can…from roots to boots, from hair to the heart, and from combat to couture!
When a woman who has experienced homelessness and/or abuse seeks to rejoin the workforce, she often needs more than assistance in wardrobe and hair styling; she needs help in developing resume writing and interview skills. Beyond these critical components, she needs to be equipped with a healthy self-esteem and an appearance that reflects her inner confidence. Makeovers That Matter and The Mindset Program answer these needs.
MTM gives these women a new, empowered look that helps them genuinely be inspired by the drive and desire they need to change their lives. MTM offers not only free makeover services and skills to prepare participants for job interviews, but also empowerment coaching, fashion advice on what to wear (and perhaps more importantly what not to wear), and critical interview do's and don’ts. Our generous sponsors, such as Paul Mitchell Schools and Orly, provide each Mindset Program graduate with gift baskets full of beauty products to support their personal grooming needs.
The beauty services don't stop at hair and makeup. MTM’s philosophy pays particular attention to the emotional and intellectual beauty of women as well. Our innovative "Pay It Forward" model challenges participants to give of themselves by performing charitable work for organizations they are passionate about. Participants are then able to witness the powerful impact they can have in their own communities, and, as a result, become more invested in applying these efforts in their own lives to produce more effective results.
Founder Michael John likes the adage, “Give a woman a fish, and she is fed for one meal. Teach her to fish and she can feed herself,” and likes to add: “and her children and ultimately the world, for a lifetime.”
